Foster
Give a rabbit a safe, loving place to land. We provide the supplies and support—your home and care help them heal and prepare for their forever family.
How Fostering Works
Fostering is a vital part of our rescue mission. When you foster, you provide a temporary, loving home for a rabbit who needs a safe place to land—whether they’re recovering from a tough past, waiting for adoption, or simply needing space to grow and gain confidence.
Our team can supply all the essentials, including food, and we’re here to support you every step of the way. All approved veterinary care is fully covered by the rescue, and appointments are arranged in coordination with our team to ensure each bunny receives the best possible treatment.
Your role is to offer daily care, gentle socialization, and a calm indoor environment where your foster bunny can thrive.
By opening your home, you help us save more lives and give each rabbit the stability they need before finding their forever family.
Fostering FAQ
Have questions about fostering? Read through our FAQ below or contact us at hello@hopandfloprabbitrescue.co.za.
What is fostering?
Fostering means providing a temporary, loving home for a rabbit while they prepare for adoption. Some bunnies need a safe place to recover, grow, or build confidence, and fosters give them the stability and care they need before moving on to their forever families.
What do I need to foster?
You’ll need a safe, indoor space where the rabbit can live comfortably, along with a bit of time each day for feeding, cleaning, and socialising. We can provide the essentials such as food and hay, so you mainly supply the environment, love, and routine.
I’ve never had a rabbit before, can I still foster?
Absolutely! Many of our fosters start with no prior rabbit experience. We offer guidance, care tips, and ongoing support to help you feel confident. As long as you’re willing to learn and provide a safe, patient home, you can be a wonderful foster.
How long would I foster for?
The length of fostering is completely up to you. We’re ideally looking for long-term fosters who can care for a rabbit until they’re ready for adoption, but there are also opportunities for short-term and emergency fosters when urgent situations arise. Whether you can help for a few weeks or several months, every foster placement makes a huge difference.
Do I have to live in Port Elizabeth?
You don’t have to live in Port Elizabeth, but we do require that you’re based in the Eastern Cape. If you need supplies, you must be able to collect them from us or be able to supply them, and we’ll need to coordinate a vet clinic willing to assist with your foster. If you’re outside the province, we’ll happily direct you to a nearby rabbit rescue so you can still help bunnies in need.
